Job Description

AECOM has a position available for an Environmental Scientist to join our Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) & Air team located in Germantown, MD. The Environmental Scientist will work under supervision of a project manager or senior level team member on a variety of EHS projects, including but not limited to: environmental compliance plans, environmental permitting, environmental site assessments, and subsurface investigations.

The successful candidate will conduct field work and prepare the associated reports for a wide variety of compliance projects. The position will require that the candidate be available to perform work in both the field and office and be able to travel out-of-town for durations up to one week at a time, as needed.

This position requires excellent written and spoken communication skills, organizational and time management skills, flexibility to work on a multitude of diverse projects, a positive attitude, and a willingness to learn new skills. The successful candidate will have the ability to communicate effectively with members of the project team, clients, site personnel and office management, and have the ability to work both independently and as a part of a project team.

Responsibilities and skillsets for this role include, but may not be limited to, the following:

  • Familiarity with environmental regulatory programs and compliance including:

  • Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA)

  • Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA)

  • National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES)

  • Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC)

  • Conduct technical work for regulatory compliance and environmental due diligence projects including completion of Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessments; conducting compliance inspections and regulatory reporting for permit compliance on behalf of clients; and reading, understanding, and communicating regulatory requirements to clients.

  • Effectively communicate with all levels of a project team and attend client meetings, as requested.

  • Perform standard scientific work requiring application of techniques and procedures.

  • Detect problems when using standardized procedures because of the condition of sample, difficulties with the equipment, etc.

  • Propose appropriate analytical methods and techniques. Assist in providing advice and consulting services within scope of scientific knowledge.

  • Draw conclusions and makes recommendations based on analysis.

  • Interpret and records data, conduct analyses, compare findings to relevant studies and local, state and federal regulations to ensure compliance.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BA/BS +2 years of experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.

  • Valid Driver’s License and as a condition of employment must be able to pass AECOM’s Motor Vehicle Records review

  • Environmental compliance experience

  • Due to the nature of work, US Citizenship is required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor degree in Environmental Science or related field

  • 4+ years of recent environmental due diligence, EHS, and subsurface investigation related experience

  • Client facing experience

  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills

  • Excellent technical writing and organizational skills

  • Good working knowledge of word-processing and integrated software applications, including MS Word, and Excel.

  • Ability to perform detail-oriented work.

  • Willingness/ability to be in the field and travel

  • This is a hybrid position and will be required to follow AECOM's hybrid work policy.

  • Relocation support is not available for this position

Offered compensation will be based on location and individual qualifications. The expected range is $60,000.00 - $80,000.00.
